Fred Darrow, 69, former chief of police, died here last night from a heart attack.

He collapsed at the home of his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Foster, 215 East Washington Street, a few minutes after returning from downtown about 7 p.m. Climbing a flight of stairs, he fell to the floor as he reached the top. He was dead when relatives reached his side.

The funeral is to be held at the Foster home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. P.M. Lind, of Queen City, assisted by the Rev. Edgar L. Knight, pastor of the Christian Church here. The body will lie in state at the Dee Riley Funeral Home until time for the rites. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.

Mr. Darrow was born in Kirksville Jan. 27, 1867, a son of Edwin and Orilla Darrow. He had lived here his entire life, with the exception of a few years spent in Montana.

He was married to Minnie Bundy, who preceded him in death several years. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Vivian Darrow, who lives in Maryland, and Mrs. Helen Garmroth, Detroit; three grandchildren and the sister, Mrs. Foster. One sister and two brothers are dead.

Mr. Darrow had lived in retirement at his home at 501 North Mulanix Street for the past few years, following end of his tenure as head of the police force. His term as chief immediately preceded the first appointment of Jim Bowles, present chief. He had been staying at the Foster home this winter.

"Obituary
"It becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of Mr. Edwin Darrow, which occurred yesterday morning about 8 o'clock, after a four days illness. His death was so sudden and unexpected that the whole community was shocked by the tidings. He had been in very poor health for years; but he was on our streets last Saturday and was seemingly in usual health. Paralysis of the brain seemed to be the immediate cause of his death; the last two days were spent in a wholly unconscious state.

"Edwin Darrow was born in Summit County, Ohio, July 28th, 1830, and died in Kirksville, Mo., Oct 26th 1887, being 57 years, 2 months and 28 days old.

"His early life was spent upon the farm. On Nov. 3, 1852 he was married to Orilla Seavey who survives him. Five children were born to them. One son died. Two, Charles E. and Fred, are honorable, promising young business men in this city. There are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Hamilton and Mrs. Ellen Foster.

"Mr. Darrow spent the first year of his married life in Iowa, but in February 1854 he came to Kirksville where he has resided 32 years.

"He has filled the honorable positions of collector and sheriff of Adair County and at the time of his death he was a member of the Board of directors of the Savings Bank. He spent nearly three years in the army in defense of his country and was both a member of the Grand Army Post and the Loyal Legion.

"He was a public spirited man, and a liberal man. His pocket-book was open to public charities and to church enterprise. His life and influence will be greatly missed because they have been widely felt.

"A remarkable circumstance is found in the fact that his father and mother are both living; the former in his 81st year and the later in the 80th year of her age. He also leaves a brother Mr. Seth Darrow, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Griffin. Memorial services will be held at the residence to-morrow (Saturday) at 11 o'clock".
