JOHN MARTIN According to entries in John Martin's bible, John and Sarah had eight children: Charles James, a son who died in infancy, John Henry, Emma Jane, Robert Bruce, Mattie Rosetta, Ann Elizabeth, and Willie Eddie.
On 7 Feb 1862 John enlisted as a Private in Company A, 15th Regiment of Iowa Infantry. At the time of his enlistment he was described as age 29, 5 feet 10 1/2 inches tall, complexion light, color of eyes blue, color of hair auburn, and his occupation was farming. On 19 Feb 1864, at Vicksburg, Mississippi, John was mustered out, and on 20 Feb 1864 he re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer in the 15th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was listed as a teamster. He was in twenty-two battles and was wounded once. He marched with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. The first battle he was in was at Shiloh and the last one was at Goldsboro. In the hard fought battle at Atlanta his commander was killed. John was mustered out as a Private on 24 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Sarah Ann died on 7 May 1880. On 9 Apr 1882 John married Rebecca Elizabeth (Patterson) Martin in Oskaloosa, Iowa, at the age of 50. John is buried in the Forest-Llewellyn cemetery in Kirksville, Missouri.
