Lewis Wise was one of a pair of fraternal twins who are said to have been the first surviving twins born in Kansas. He and his twin, Sara Wise (later Backus) were born in Lawrence, Kansas on Sep. 29, 1856. Their parents were Louis Wise (orig. Wiese) a German immigrant and Anna Bridget Hastings Wise, an Irish immigrant. They settled in the new town of Lawrence in 1855. When Quantrill's band raided Lawrence, their father, Louis was shot down while his wife and children were watching. The twins, Lewis and Sarah were 7 years old when their father was killed.
