Lena P. Buckingham, 87, of Ames, Iowa and a former resident of Kirksville, died at noon Monday (April 13 1987) at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames where she been a patient the past four days.
The daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth (Doolin) Peterson, she was born Sept. 22, 1899 in Sullivan County. On June 28 1925 at Humphreys, she married James D. Buckingham who preceded her in death in February 1951.
Also preceding her in death was a son, Alan Buckingham who died Dec. 7, 1938 and one brother, Clyde Peterson.
Surviving are a son, Edward D. Buckingham of Ames; a grandson Matthew Buckingham and other relatives including Frank Buckingham and Dwight Buckingham of Kirksville and Jeanne Glaser of Bethesda, MD.
Mrs. Buckingham came to Kirksville to attend high school and graduated in 1919. She received her B.S. degree from NMSU in 1923. In 1944, she received her Master's degree from Iowa State University.
She taught Home Economics in the Kirksville Junior High School for several years and for 10 years she was a member of the faculty at NMSU and for 15 years she taught at the University of Northern Iowa. She retired in 1968. A member of the First Christian Church at Ames, Mrs. Buckingham also was a member of the American Association of University Women. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday (April 15, 1987) at the Forest-Llewellyn cemetery with the Rev. Frank Hall officiating. The body will at the Davis-Playle Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Wednesday until time for service.
