Vesta Mandana Reynolds Johnson, age 96, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away Sunday afternoon October 10, 1993 in the Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center.
She was born May 21, 1897 on a farm east of Greentop, Missouri, the daughter of Theodroe Clarence and Katherine Way Reynolds.
On December 24, 1914 in Schuyler County, Missouri she was united in marriage to Ernest Manford Johnson.
Surviving are a son, Theodore Alvin (Ted) Johnson and his wife, Fern of Queen City and a daughter, Helen Olena Steele and her husband Virgil of Kirksville, Missouri; six grandsons, Evan Johnson, Melvin Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Russell Steele and Philip Steele; two granddaughters, Kathryn Draper and Ruth Valentine.
Also surviving are eight great-granddaughters, seen great-grandsons, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two children in infancy, three brothers, Roland, Way and Caverno Reynolds, two half-sisters, Pearl Reynolds and Mable Love and half brother Perry Reynolds, two grandsons and a nephew.
Vesta was raised east of Greentop in Schuyler county and received her education at a rural school and was active in extension club work, being a charter member of the Porter Club. She was a member of the Brashear Community Bible Church. For several years she lived in the Bashear Senior Housing.
For a number of years Vesta cared for newborn babies in her family and for other Kirksville families. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and did a lot of sewing for family members and made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday October 13, 1993 in the Hudson-Rimer Park View Chapel in Kirksville, Missouri. The Reverend Darrell Draper will officiate the services. Music will be provided by Keith Turner, soloist and Mildred Cooper, organist. Muscial selections will be "Farther Along" and "Jesus Saviour, Pilot Me". Burial will be in the Jewell Cemetery northwest of Kirksville, Missouri.
Casket bearers will be her six grandsons.
