Virgil Ellis Steele, age 84, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Saturday January 4, 2003 at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri.
He was born July 29, 1918 in Adair County, the son of Harvey and Oma Hankins Steele. On November 8, 1940 in Kirksville he was united in marriage to Helen Olena Johnson.
Surviving are his wife Helen of Kirksville, Missouri; two daughters, Kathryn Draper and husband Darrell of Kirksville, Misouri and Ruth Valentine and husband Bob of San Diego, California; two sons, Russell Steele and wife Michelle and Philip Steele and wife Debbie, both of Kirksville, Missouri; two sisters, Beulah Logsdon and husband Bob of Florida and Bearl Scriven of Kirksville, Missouri; six grandchildren, Darren Draper and wife Gigi, Kerri Price and husband Robert, Christine Kochman, Jeffrey Plumlee and his wife Melissa, Morgan and Lauren Steele; ten great-grandchildren, Dax and Macy Draper, Karise, Abriana and Grant Price, Soane and Quin Kochman, Mike, Bill and Katie Plumlee, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Paul Wayne Steele; one daughter, Nancy Ella Steele; two brothers, Carl and Cecil Steele and one sister Pearl Floyd.
Virgil was a lifelong farmer who truly loved the land. He was most content watching his crops and cattle grow and he continued to farm until the time of his death. He collected antique and vintage cars and regularly joined other members of the Antique Car Club on antique car cruises throughout the midwest.
Virgil was active in numerous bowling leagues and was inducted into the Kirksville Bowling Hall of Fame in 2001. He was an avid quail hunter who invited many of his friends and family members to enjoy his quail hunting experiences with him. He loved to play cards regularly with his wife Helen, his sister, Bearl Scriven and with other family members and friends.
Virgil had a special place for his family. He was married for 62 years to the love of his life, Helen. He was revered as the patriarch of his close knit family and instilled in them the principles by which he lived including honesty, hard work and a strong commitment to family. He could often be found with a lapful of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, whom he always made feel special and who adored him.
Virgil was an active member of the New Hope Evangelical Church, was a past member of the National Farmers Organization and was a founding member of the Adair County Feeder Calf Association. He served on the school board of the East Center Rural School and was a 4-H leader.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 7, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville. The Rev. Darrell Draper and the Rev. James Maxey will officiate. Music will be provided by Harold Moyer, Vickie Cooper, Tammy Johnson and Bonnie Harrelson.
Interment will be in the Jewell Cemetery in Adair County, Missouri.
Casket bearers will be John Allen, Rick Steele, Ralph Steele, Evan Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Bob Steele, Jerry Steele, Gary Butcher, Alvin Johnson, Melvin Johnson and Jack Winkleman.
