---Valma D. Bruce, age 98, of La Plata, Missouri, passed away on Sunday (September 14, 1997), at the La Plata Nursing Home.
---Born on September 6, 1899, she was the daughter of Henry Melvin and Matilda (Magers) Ross. On June 3, 1920, in Kirksville, Missouri, she married Ira Bruce, who preceded her in death on January 11, 1977.
---Also preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Maudie Trader; and one brother Harvey Ross.
---Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Jean Bruce of La Plata, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Ida Mae Rolison of La Plata, Missouri; two grandchildren, John Bruce and Linda Stuart; and six great-grandchildren.
---Valma resided in the Gifford, Missouri, and La Plata, Missouri areas all of her life. She was a graduate of the Gifford High School and attended Normal College of Kirksville, Missouri. She taught in rural Macon County Schools and owned and operated Bruce's Bakery, in La Plata. She was a member of the La Plata Christian Church.
---Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (September 17, 1997), at the Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri, with the Reverend Jerry Briscoe officiating. Music will be provided by Shirley Matticks, organist and Trudy Pollock, soloist. Musical selections will be "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art".
---Burial will be in the La Plata Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Naughton, Don White, Dick Rhea, Wilson Belt, Merl Matticks, and Jim Elliott.
---Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (September 17, 1997).
---The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Valma D. Bruce to the La Plata Nursing Home. Memorials may be left at or mailed to the Travis Funeral Chapel, La Plata, Missouri.
