Josephine Philippina Blind was born in Dennweiler-Frohnback, Germany, the daughter of Johann Nicklaus and Maria Elisabetha Carolina (Theiss) Blind. She married Jacob Shafer in Germany before they immigrated to America in 1866 with three of their children. They settled south of Novinger, Missouri on a farm where they had six more children. According to the census records Josephine was the mother of ten children but only nine were living in 1900. Jacob and Josephine's daughter, Louisa (born 2/5/1862) died before they came to America. Josephine's parents both died in 1870, her mother on February 3, and her father Nickel on April 5, in Dennweiler-Frohnbach, Bayern, Germany.

Jacob was born in Thallichtenberg, Germany and married Josephine Phillipina Blind. They immigrated to America in 1866 with their three youngest children, landing first in New York. They then took a steamship to New Orleans. After journeying up the Mississippi River by riverboat to Hannibal, Missouri they traveled by train to Macon and then by wagon to Kirksville. They settled on a farm south of Novinger, Missouri. Jacob and Josephine were the parents of ten children according to the census record. Their child Louisa died in Germany before they made the trip to America with three children, Carl (known as Charley in America), Josephine (who was listed as "P" on the ships passenger list), and Lena.
