Velma Odessa Cassady, 65, of Rt. 1, Novinger, died at 5:02 Monday afternoon (April 9, 1979) in a Kirksville hospital where she had been a patient since March 30.

Born on Sept. 26, 1913 in Shattuck, Okla., she was the daughter of Curty W. and Etha Wiedenkofer Pope. On Dec. 24, 1932 in Kirksville, she was married to Virgil Eugene ("Jack") Cassady who preceded her in death on March 7, 1977. Also preceding her in death were one son, one brother and one granddaughter.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Velma LaVon) Dixon of Prineville, Ore.; two sons, Donald Eugene Cassady and William Lee Cassady, both of Rt. 1, Novinger; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one sister, Opal Parker of LaPlata.

At an early age, Mrs. Cassady moved with her parents to the Youngstown community. She attended Sloan's Point School. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Cassady resided in the Youngstown community. Before her retirement in 1975, due to ill health, Mrs. Cassady had been an employee of the Florsheim Shoe Company for over 30 years.

After 10 o'clock Wednesday morning the body will be at the Johnson Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon (April 12, 1979) at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the Lutz cemetery.

The casket will be closed at the funeral hour and not reopened.

Virgil Eugene ("Jack") Cassady, 63, of Rt. 1, Novinger died at 9 o'clock Monday morning in a Kirksville hospital, where he had been a patient only a short time. Death was unexpected and attributed to an apparent stroke.

Born March 23, 1913 in Coal City, Iowa, he was the son of John Henry and Maude Mae Wright Cassady. On Dec. 24, 1932 in Kirksville, he married Velma Odessa Pope who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Velma Lavon) Dixon of Rt. 1, Novinger; two sons, Donald Eugene Cassady and William Lee Cassady, both of Rt. 1, Novinger; 11 grandchildren; his step-mother, Alta Cassady of 1201 S. Baird; one sister, Cleo Jenkins of Trenton and two half-sisters, Mrs. Garlad [sic] (Ozelma) Mahurin of 1201 S. Baird and Maycel Robinson of Fresno, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Wayne Cassady in 1947; one granddaughter, Vickie Lea Dixon on Dec. 28, 1965 and one half-brother, Glenn Cassady in infancy.

As a small child, Mr. Cassady moved with his parents to Youngstown, where he lived until his death. He attended Sloan's Point rural school. After his schooling he worked in the coal mines until 1955. He then went to work at the International Shoe Company, where he remained until his retirement in 1974.

After 7 o'clock this evening the body will be at the Johnson Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The Rev. Archie Cooper will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Lutz cemetery near Youngstown.

The casket will be closed at the funeral hour and not reopened.

Bearers will be: Dave Vlahovich, Daniel Vlahovich, Gary Blurton, Gary Luman, Bob Holt and Archie Lay.
