PEORIA, IL - Vera Ovene Murrell, 87, of Peoria passed away and went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at her home.
She was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Shannon County, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Murrell; one son, William H. Murrell; her parents, John and Nora Smotherman Lee; her brother, Willis Lee; and her sister, Lillian Rieck.
She is survived by her sons, Dallas R. Murrell of Metamora, Ill., Bill Holden of Dudley, Mo., and Rich Murrell of Kansas City, Mo. Also surviving are four nieces, one nephew, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ovene was a proud, independent woman who lived through the Great Depression, World War II and many tumults in her life, all the while having a great attitude and helping others have positive experiences.
Ovene worked as an accountant and bookkeeper most of her adult life and helped her family in many enterprises, ranging from opening the Dairy Princess in West Plains, Mo., during the City Centennial of 1952 to being the primary "deer checker" for Howell County in the 1950s and 1960s.
Living most of her adult life in Peoria, Ill., Ovene was an active member of First Christian Church of Peoria. She recently was named Deacon Emeritus at the church.
Ovene served others constantly and was a 40-year volunteer for the Proctor Hospital Auxiliary.
Graveside services will be at Howell Memorial Park in West Plains, Mo.
She will be missed greatly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
