On January 8, 1944, the horticultural world, and especially the Hannibal Garden Club lost one whose rare and valued contributions to gardening have been so modestly and quietly made that the keen sorrow of loss grows with the passing days.
Evan Thompson Cameron, a former judge of the Eastern District of Marion County Court, died suddenly at his home.
Judge Cameron was a man of recognized integrity and his friendly and accommodating nature won for him a host of friends. He was well versed in the history of Hannibal, and often related many interesting stories of the older citizens.
He was the owner of the Mark Twain Cave, and also an ardent admirer of Mark Twain. He portrayed the part of the author in December, 1943, when the City of Hannibal accepted the gift of the law office at Mark Twain's father which was given by Warner Brothers.
He was a nature lover and has been affiliated with the Hannibal Garden Club from its beginning.
He had charge of the work of The Bluebird Trail and helped the Boy Scouts in placing boxes, two a mile, along the highways. The Trail extends almost to Bowling Green to the south and to Palmyra to the north of Hannibal.
He served in many offices in the Garden Club, and was very active, attending meetings regularly when his health permitted. He will be sorely missed from their ranks for he gave so untiringly and unstintingly of himself.
