Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 20 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Steele for Howard Pender, 63, who died Dec. 17 in Van Buren, Mo.
The Rev. Pete Soens and the Rev. James F. McCrary officiated.
Mr. Pender retired Jan. 26, 1977, after operating a jewelry business in Steele for more than 27 years. He was a partner in the Neil Land Company Development (Deer Run Plat) near Van Buren at the time of his death.
Mr. Pender was cutting firewood with friends on a hill near Van Buren when he became ill. Friends noted that his chainsaw was not operating and went to his aid. He asked to be taken to the hospital and they were en route to medical help when he died.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Pender was a member of the United Methodist Church in Steele.
He served as president of the Steele Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Pender attended Arkansas State University and he also studied at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1932 to 1934. He was graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1934.
He was the son of the late P.E. and Ethel Carlock Pender.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Cunningham in Steele on May 4, 1938.
He leaves his wife, Ruth Pender of Steele; a brother, Roy Pender of Memphis; a niece, Annette Detzel of Memphis; and a great niece, Yvonne Detzel, also of Memphis.
Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with the John W. German Funeral Home of Steele in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth Pender died December 31, 1979, at Doctors' Hospital in Poplar Bluff.
She was born March 8, 1915 in Macon, Mo.
A retired school teacher, she was the wife of the late Howard Pender, jeweler in Steele.
She had been making her home in Van Buren for the past few years after they retired.
Mrs. Pender was the daughter of the late Rev. John William and Frances Ann Cunningham. Her father was pastor of First Baptist Church here in Steele for a number of years.
Funeral service was conducted Thursday, January 3, 1980, at First Baptist Church in Steele, Rev. James F. McCrary and Rev. Gene Edwards, officiating.
Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Mrs. Pender leaves a sister, Iris Britt of Steele and a brother, Harold Cunningham, of Steele.
