Mrs. Ethel Lucy Pender died at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital February 26, 1971. Born April 4, 1886 in Dongola, Ill., Mrs. Pender was the daughter of Francis Marion and Laura Peeler Carlock.
She was married to the late Pleas Edgar Pender, who preceded her in death April 24, 1966.

Mrs. Pender worked with her husband for 13 years at the Depot where he was agent.
Although confined to a wheel chair for the past 20 years, Mrs. Pender remained active in the Methodist Church. Because of her work with and devotion to the church, the Day Circle of the Women's Society of Christian Service was named in honor of her - the Ethel Pender Circle.
Services were held at the Methodist Church in Steele Monday, March 1, 1971, the Rev. Claude Stone, Jr., and the Rev. Marvin Niblack officiating.
Mrs. Pender leaves two sons: Howard Pender of Steele and Roy Pender of Memphis. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Grace Wafler of Steele and a brother, Floyd Carlock, of Mountain Home, Ark., a granddaughter, Annette Detzel of Memphis and a great-granddaughter, Yvonne Detzel, of Memphis.
Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery with the original German Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Clarence Poteet, David Kelley, James Fleeman, Dwain Becker, E.C. Gilbert, and Phillip Koury.

P.E. Pender Dies Sunday at Hospital

Funeral services were held April 26 at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church here for P.E. Pender, 82, who died early Sunday Morning at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. The Rev. Charles Miller officiated assisted by the Rev. Marvin Niblack and the Rev. James McCrary.
A retired Frisco railroad agent, Mr. Pender came here as agent from Perryville Missouri in March 1918, and served until his retirement February 1, 1949. He was born January 10, 1884, in Piedmont, Missouri.
Throughout his 48 years in this community he has contributed much time and effort to civic, social, and church work as well as to the business to the area. He was one of the founders and director of the First National Bank in Steele and the Steele Building and loan Association; secretary of the Factory Committee since shortly after it's formation; on the Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church since the days when the church was located where the Assembly of God Church now is; on the Steele School Board for two terms during the late 20's and early 30's; in charge of the Methodist Church "Lord's Acres" project; on the city council in the late 1920's; a member of the Steele Housing Authority; and an active supporter of the Republican Party in the area. He and Mrs. Pender drew the plans for the Methodist Church here, and in 1964 Mr. Pender was named "Man of the year" by the Steele Chamber of Commerce.
Never one to stop work at retirement age, Mr. Pender and Dewey Bullock just last summer painted all the Pender rental houses alone. He was always a staunch supporter of all the activities of the public school/
Mr. Pender was married to Ethel Carlock on March 4, 1910 in Dongola, Illinois..He leaves, besides his wife, two sons, Roy Pender of Memphis and Howard Pender of Steele; a brother, Otis Pender of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and a sister Emma Hummert of Milwaukee, one granddaughter, Mrs. Annette Detzel of Memphis and one great granddaughter, Yvonne Detzel.
Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery with German Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers were Bob Garrett, Harold Cooperman, Harbert Hudgens, Clarence McCollum, Tommy German, Bert Poteet, Lester Graham, and Clarence Poteet.
Honorary pallbearers were Marshall Cameron, Jack Stewart, Riley Knight, J. F. Patterson, Thelbert Bishop, Clark Frame, Roy Marshall, Carl Sheeley, Jack Kelley, George Burnett, and Elmer Funderburk.
