Ruth Rita Harper Toohey, 90, of Walnut Grove, Calif., formerly of Steele, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 in Walnut Grove.
Born June 17, 1914 in Holcomb, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Minnie Harper.
She was a graduate of Steele High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1937 from the University of Missouri.
She taught high school French and history from 1937-1941 and worked for the government in Washington, D.C. from 1941-1942.
Ruth received a degree in nursing from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. and as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army, served as an RN in Saipan until the war ended in 1945.
She then worked for C&H Sugar Refinery as head nurse in Crockett, Calif., from 1946-1955.
Ruth was united in marriage to C.J. Toohey, M.D. on Dec. 27, 1955 in San Francisco, Calif. He preceded her in death.
She worked overseas in East Pakistan from 1956-1958; in Afghanistan from 1960-1962; as a CJ doctor for Morrison-Knudsen Construction in San Francisco; and was a high school teacher from 1965-1986 at Vallejo Senior High School teaching history and government. She retired in 1986.
Mrs. Toohey leaves one son, Michael Roy Toohey; and one granddaughter, Sierra.
