Wife Of Retired Novelty Mail Carrier Died At Kirksville Hospital

Mrs. A. V. Holmes, 71, of La Plata, formerly of the Novelty vicinity, died at 10:45 o'clock Sunday morning, Aug. 16, 1970, at a hospital in Kirksville where she had been a patient since July 18. She had been in failing health some time. She and her husband moved to La Plata from Novelty following his retirement Jan. 31, 1960, as a rural mail carrier there.

Funeral services were at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel in Edina. The Rev. Carroll Kakac of Shelbina, former pastor of the Novelty Christian Church, of which she was a member, officiated. Burial was in the Novelty Cemetery.

Surviving with the husband are three daughters, Helen, Mrs. Carl Baily, of Parma Heights, Ohio, Caroline, Mrs. Robert Wegner, of Hingham, Mass., and Catherine, Mrs. Stanley Walker, of west of Novelty, two sons, Andrew Vance Holmes, Jr., of Las Vegas, Nev., and John Holmes of southwest of Novelty, 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Letha, Mrs. T. J> Rowland, Jr., of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Cleo, Mrs. Harold Kleinkopf, of Heyburn, Idaho, and a brother, Ray Howerton, of Bowling Green.

Mrs. Holmes was born July 27, 1899, in Shelby County, a daughter of Zora E. and Lillie Belle Fite Howerton. As Zelma Florence Howerton she was married June 15, 1917, at Shelbyville, to Andrew Vance Holmes, and they observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary July 2, 1967, with their five children and families.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her parents, her father, Aug. 8, 1960, and her mother, June 4, 1966.
