Edward Lauderdale Ellis was one of two children born to Col. Wilmot Edward Ellis and his first wife Seddie Clark Lauderdale. Edward did not marry or have any children during his short life-time.
Edward graduated from WestPoint Military Academy in 1908 and enlisted in the US Army on March 2, 1909. By April of 1910, Private Edward L. Ellis was in Portland, Maine with his military unit. Edward was discharged from the US Army on March 1, 1912 at Fort Niagara, New York.

Edward was severely injured when the automobile he was a passenger in plunged 15 feet down an embankment fracturing both legs and receiving internal injuries as reported in the Kansas City Star Newspaper on November 13, 1913.
