A great lady was laid to rest on Tuesday, February 27, 1996. But though she is no longer with us in body, her memory and influence will live on in the lives of the many who knew and loved her. She truly embodied the qualities of a good mother, sister, friend, neighbor, citizen, and Christian.

Mary Lorene Kearney Wagster was born in Huntingdon, Tenn., on January 5, 1905. She was the daughter of William Oscar and Ruby Browning Kearney. Lorene was a twin; her sister, Lillian, died when she was two days old.

Lorene's mother died when she was a young child. She lived with her aunt, Pearl Haynes, in Trezevant, Tenn., until she was 11 and her dad married Linnie Browning. The family then moved to Missouri.

Most of Lorene's life was spent in the Cooter and Steele area. She was married to Floyd Wagster in 1925, and most of their married life was spent in Cooter, where Floyd worked in the drug store which he later purchased. Floyd preceded her in death in 1968.

Lorene was well-known and loved throughout Pemiscot County. She influenced many young lives while teaching in the Oak Ridge, Number Eight, and Cooter Schools. She also was very active in Republican Party politics in Pemiscot County. However, she was best-known and loved for her work in Holly Grove Baptist Church at Cooter, having taught young people for many years before becoming teacher of the Dorcas ladies' class, a position she held until her health caused her to retire. She also was church pianist for many years.

Lorene moved to Oklahoma City in 1990 to be near her son, Ronald. She lived there until her death on February 21, 1996.

She leaves another son, Floyd "Buddy" Wagster of Baton Rouge, La.; two daughters, Florine Baxley of Springfield, Mo., and Norma Roy of Destin, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Other survivors are her sisters: Drew Bauman of Memphis, Tenn., LaVerne Chandler of Trinity, Texas, and Wilmeth Edwards of Cooter.

Three other sisters besides her twin, Corilla Benson, Audrey Nell Jennings, and Evelyn Kearney, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at Holly Grove Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 27, 1996, with Rev. Joe Smith in charge of services. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Tarbutton, Bo Reid, Darrell Edwards, Charles Barger, Pauline Alexander, and Marvin Childers.

Rest in peace, Lorene. We loved you and miss you.
