MAR 4, 1937: PIONEER CITIZEN OF COUNTY DIED MONDAY --
Mrs. Margaret Graves, 84 years of age, pioneer citizen of Newton county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John McAntiee, early Monday morning after a long period of failing health. Mrs. Graves had not appeared critically ill and her death came unexpectedly. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.W. Moore at Thompson's Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon and burial made in the Ritchey family cemetery at Newtonia where members of her family have had their final resting place since the Civil War.
Pallbearers were four nephews, H.M. Ritchey and Dr. R.C. Lamson of Neosho, J.J. McAfee of Joplin and Ernest McAfee of Springfield, and John Beavers and Roy Kenney of Neosho.
Margaret Ritchey was among the youngest of ten sons and daughters of Judge and Mrs. M.H. Ritchey, the former a native of Tennessee, who settled in the Shoal creek valley at the present site of Ritchey, and was largely responsible for building the village which bears his name. He later established a home at the present site of Newtonia, helped to build that town and reared his family there. His sons and daughters married and left the home to become worthy and outstanding citizens.
Their daughter, Margaret, first married Lee Rice of Newtonia and to this union were born three children, Ritchey, Ben and Lina Rice. Of these three only one, Ben Rice, survives. Sometime after the death of Lee Rice his widow married Samuel Graves and to them were born Coleman, Harvey, Virginia, and Martha Sue. Of these only Martha Sue, who is now Mrs. McAntire, survives. One brother, Sanford H. Ritchey of Stockton, Cal., and a number of grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Graves was a woman of brilliant mind, deep sympathy for human frailties and a fine sense of humor, and retained these faculties long past her allotted three score and ten years. Source: The Neosho Times
