Obituary: "Again it is our mournful duty to record the loss to this county of a generally respected and worthy citizen. Thomas Hoog, brother of Jacob Hoog, died at his residence near the River Aux Vases, on Sunday, March 24th, 1884, after a lingering sickness of many years, of dropsy, at the age of 77 years. "Mr. Hoog was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, in the year 1807 and came to this country in 1832, the first two years of his life in the U.S. being passed in Philadelphia, the rest in Ste. Genevieve Co. When he was 32 years old, he was united in matrimony to Anastasia Grieshaber, sister of Messrs Nicholas and John Grieshaber of New Offenburg. His wife preceeded him in death about nine years. Their union was a happy one, and blessed with ten children, of whom five died, two in infancey, and three after marriage. The surviving children are: Rosa Flieg, Simon Hoog, Peter Hoog, Elisabeth Fallert, and Maria Naeger. Of the second generation there are alive 44 grandchildren. "Thomas Hoog was one of the first German pioneers of this county. He was a man of noble impulses, a faithful and tender husband and father, and a true, trusty, and confiding friend, and as such was beloved and respected wherever he was known. "The earthly remains were laid to rest on the Catholic graveyard at Zell and the multitude of mourners attending the funeral was proof of the general esteem in which the deceased was held by the community. R.I.P." {Obit obtained from the family files of Valerie Holifield}
