William Stanley Scantlin, known to friends and family as Bill, lost his battle with cancer and died on December 24, 2010 in Neosho, Missouri, at the age of 78. He lived in Neosho with his wife, Barbara, for over 30 years.

Born in La Junta, Colorado on May 23, 1932, to Ralph and Florence Scantlin, he grew up in La Junta and graduated from La Junta High School in 1950 and Otero Junior College. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. Upon returning, he married Barbara May Skinner of La Junta, in Raton, New Mexico, December 23, 1957.

He attended and graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School located in Monterey, California. He served in the Viet Nam War in 1967 - 1968; was stationed from 1968 - 1970 at Naha Naval Base in Okinawa. He was then stationed at the Naval Air Station and Test Center headquartered in Patuxent River, Maryland. There he worked on the Navy’s F-14 Tomcat and AV-8 Harrier programs during their introduction to the United States Navy and Marine Corp Air Wings. Here he finished his 25-year career as a Naval Aviator, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Upon his retirement, he moved his family to Neosho, Missouri near his grandparent’s McDonald County Farm, which he and his wife owned. Bill, Barbara and their three children: Ward, Kelly Jo, and Scott, enjoyed the 80-acre Neosho farm the family bought. Bill worked for Newton County’s Economic Security Corporation and at True Value Hardware Store in Neosho.

Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, William Ward Scantlin, and wife, Ronda (Dayton, OH; his daughter, Kelly Jo Smith, and husband, Brad, (La Junta, CO); and his son, Scott Lee Scantlin (Ozark, MO). He has two grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Alexandra Scantlin. He is also survived by his sister, Patty Jo Hiner, and husband, Jim, (Commerce City, CO); and a maternal aunt, Hazel Grundy, (Dumus, TX) who recently celebrated her 95th birthday.

Bill enjoyed restoring old cars, especially his 1958 Chevy Impala, which he, along with his wife, took to vintage car shows. Working on machinery and fixing and tinkering with mechanical contraptions were a passion. Traveling to Naval reunions and honoring the service of our military men and women was of importance. He enjoyed his farm, and the caring of animals filled his days. His final year was a brave battle with an enemy he could not see. But with his patient “take each day as it comes” attitude, he faced his life and his death with grace and courage. He shall be missed.
