David S. Whitfield, 88, of Steele, Mo, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Services were held Oct. 28 at the Steele Church of Christ, with John Mundy officiating. Burial was at Mount Zion Cemetery in Steele, Mo. John W. German Funeral Home of Steele, Mo, was in charge of arrangements. Russ Fullerton, Charles Pritchard, Therron Nowlin, Gary Bruton, Howard Burns, and Randy McDaniel served as pallbearers.

Whitfield was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Steele, Mo, son of the late Thomas W. and Liza Bell Hatley Whitfield. He was employed with the US Postal Service in Steele, Mo, where he was a rural mail carrier for 40 years. He was the widower of Montana Crawford Whitfield and was a member of the Steele Church of Christ where he taught Sunday school class for many years.

Survivors include a son, Roy L. Whitfield of Piggott, Ark; a daughter, Davie Kay (James) Cary of Martin; a brother, Douthitt (Laura) Whitfield of Camden; a sister-in-law, Betty Whitfield of Steele, Mo; two grandchildren, John (Amy) Cary of Columbia and Alan (Kim) Cary of Martin; and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, JL Whitfield, Thomas Whitfield and WD "Buck" Whitfield; and three sisters, Elisine Whitfield, Irene Hatley, and Christine Yates.
