Friday, September 16, 1949:
Benjamin M. McBride, 64, was killed instantly after being hit by a car on Route J. near Denton, Tuesday night about 7:30.
A.L. Lemonds of Kennett was reported as driver of the car. Mr. Lemonds was returning to Kennett and said he was blinded by an approaching truck and did not see Mr. McBride who was walking along the road until he had already struck him. He immediately stooped the car and notified Steele officers, who arrived on the scene a few minutes after the accident.
A coroner's jury returned a verdict of death by unavoidable accident a few hours after the accident occurred. Coroner James Osborne attributed death to a broken neck and other injuries.
