Dwight Slaughter, 92, Mt. Vernon, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon. He was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Hurley, to Nathan and Sarah (Carr) Slaughter. Slaughter served his country in the U.S. Navy, commissioned to the USS Lang, during WWII. He married Montaree (Curbow) in June of 1946. Slaughter was a general foreman for the Wertz Construction Company. He attended the Little Flock Primitive Baptist church in Hurley. Preceding him in death was wife Montaree on May 29, 1998; sisters, Logie, Aleen, Opallean, Rosie and Lou, half-sisters, Susie, Elva and Alma; and brothers, Curtis, Edgar and Guy. He is survived by: three children and their spouses, Rocky and Debbie Slaughter, Elkhorn, Wisc., Connie and Bob Souden, California, Mo., and Dawn Slaughter, Branson; two grandchildren and their spouses, Nathan and Jeni Slaughter, Iowa, and Tara and Bryan Frost, Wisc.; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Zeb Slaughter, Eugene, Oreg.; two sisters, Myrt Rice, Boise, Idaho, and Alice Pearce, Kansas City; other relatives and friends. A visitation was from 5-7 p.m., with services at 7 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic, with Nathan Slaughter officiating. Interment was at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in Short Cemetery, Hurley. Memorials were suggested to St. John’s Hospice or Missouri Veterans Home, Mt. Vernon.
