Alexander Ragsdale, an old pioneer, died at his home five miles southwest of Greenfield on Wednesday, Dec. 10th, 1902. Uncle Alex, as he was called by all who knew him, was one of the earliest settlers in this country. In the year of 1837 he came with his father's family and settled near where he lived and died. There are but few men living who have seen as much of the development of this country from a wild and unsettled condition. It was then Barry county. He saw the county of Dade established, witnessed the laying out of Greenfield, saw the disappearance of the Indian wigwams and the building of the homes of the white settlers, the laying out of more towns, the turning of the unbroken prairies and wooded hills to well tilled and fertile farms, and of his kind few are left, and with his death and the death of his kind of pioneers the country sees the passing of the men who helped to make Dade county what it is today. His was a life of work, quiet and unassuming, the kind of man who believed only in doing. He had no children; his life was spent in assisting others; but so quiet was he in his ministrations that only the ones he assisted ever knew of it. He died as he lived, full of peace toward his God and his fellow man. To the writer he said he was prepared and wanted to go; that his sun had set; that his friends and relatives and associates of the early days had nearly all been summoned above, and that he seemed almost a stranger so much had conditions changed. He leaves one sister, wife of C. C. McLemore, and a host of nephews and nieces to mourn his loss, all the remainder of his father's family, except one surviving sister, being dead. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Moore of Lockwood, after which his body was buried in the Ragsdale cemetery, where for 65 years have been deposited the remains of the old pioneer's family.
