We are sorry to chronicle the death of Mrs. J. A. Howerton which occurred at 1 o'clock, p.m., Nov. 9th. Her death was not unexpected from dropsy for the last 18 months and under the treatment of different physicians. She underwent many operations. Nothing seemed to do her much good. She bore her sickness with a fortitude almost beyond belief. Death was ultimately brought on by hemorrhage. She was in her right mind until the last moment and shook hands for the last time and was gone. Mary was the daughter of John and Emiline Stephens, deceased, and was 56 years old. She was born and raised in this part of the country and was united in marriage with Jno. A. Howerton in 1882. She professed faith in Christ and joined the Baptist church at the age of 15. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin and her remains were laid to rest in Clark Cemetery.
