OBITUARY:

Samuel A. Murphy was born near Hendrysburg, Ohio, in 1834, and died at his home in the western part of the county, November 23, 1910. He graduated from the University of Michigan in the Class of 1860, and was married in Ann Arbor, Michigan, May 13, 1865. He came to Kirksville soon after and opened an academy for advanced classes of young men in the old building later occupied by Prof. Baldwin's Normal school. He afterward entered the land composing his farm of 240 acres, which he developed, and during the winter season taught country schools.

He was a man of fine education and retiring in disposition. An excellent citizen without a blemish upon his life. He had amassed considerable property. In addition to his farm of 240 acres, his personal property, principally money in bank, amounted to $4,530.60. In his will he left Golden Rule district $200, Carey Hopson district $200, Elm Grove district $100, W. P. Linder district $100, Maple Grove [$]400; Ringo Point cemetery $50. He made these bequests because the school districts mentioned gave him employment when he needed it. He left his wife what the law allowed and the remainder of his property to Joseph V. Gray and wife, Mrs. Gray having been adopted and brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Murphy. Funeral services took place from the home and the remains were laid to rest in Ringo's Point cemetery.
