-FUNERAL SERVICES SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT BRASHEAR CHURCH
Joseph S. Shuman, 85 years old, life-long resident of the Gibbs community, died Thursday evening at a Kirksville hospital.
The son of Daniel K. and Mary (Peters) Shuman, he was born on Oct. 31, 1870, on a farm three miles northwest of Gibbs, where he lived his entire life.
His marriage to Mary Martha Garlock took place on Oct. 31, 1895. Three daughters were born to them.
Survivors in addition to the widow are three daughters, Elsie Shuman of East Chicago, Indiana, Mrs. Virgil (May) Barnes of Hurdland, and Mrs. Gilbert (Frances) Moore of Gibbs; two grandchildren; and a sister, Miss Elizabeth Shuman of 805 S. Florence.
Three sisters and four grandchildren preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Kirksville Methodist Church.
Funeral services for Mr. Shuman will be held Sunday afternoon at the Brashear Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Gibbs.

MARY MARTHA SHUMAN DIES NEAR HURDLAND -WAS AT HOME OF DAUGHTER; LAST RITES WEDNESDAY
Mrs. Mary Martha Shuman, 84, died Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Virgil Barnes, east of Hurdland. She had been in failing health for the past two months.
Born in Adair County on Mar. 30, 1873, she was the daughter of Jackson and Jane (Kelley) Garlock. On Oct. 31, 1895 she was married to Joseph S. Shuman in Adair County, and to this union three daughters were born.
Surviving are her daughters, Miss Elsie Shuman of East Chicago, Indiana, Mrs. Gilbert (Frances) Moore of Gibbs, and Mrs. Virgil (May) Barnes of Hurdland; two brothers, M.E. Garlock of Kirksville, and J.G. Garlock of Fowler, Illinois; two grandsons, Richard Barnes of the U.S. Army stationed in France, and Carl Moore of Gibbs; and seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1956, and one sister.
Mrs. Shuman had lived most of her life in the Prairie Bird community west of Gibbs. She was a member of the Prairie Bird United Brethren Church.
Funeral services will be held at the Brashear Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Gibbs.
The body is at the Easley Funeral Home in Brashear and will remain there until the funeral hour.
