Mary Elsie Shuman, 93 of 103 Alma Dr., died Monday morning, Feb. 12, 1990 at her home.
Born Jan. 4, 1897 in Gibbs, she was the daughter of Joseph Solomon and Mary Martha "Minnie" Eleanor (Garlock) Shuman. Mrs. Shuman was born and reared on a farm in the Prairie Bird community that her grandfather owned. She attended the Prairie Bird rural school, graduating from Kirksville High School and receiving her degree from Kirksville Normal School.
Miss Shuman taught in Prairie Bird, Banner, and Star rural schools and Gibbs Public School in Adair County. Later she went to East Chicago, Indiana, where she taught at the James Whitcam Riley School for 37 years. In 1963, following her retirement, Miss Shuman moved to Kirksville and attended Kirksville State Teachers College, receiving her Master's degree.
Miss Shuman was a former member and served as president of the Indiana Teachers Association in 1956-57. At that time, she attended the National Education Association annual meeting. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Business & Professional Women's Association. She had been active in R.S.V.P. for many years, delivering Meals on Wheels and taught Vietnamese children English. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and a strong supporter of the YWCA. In 1980, Miss Shuman was given the Outstanding Leadership Award by Community Betterment.
As a child, Miss Shuman belonged to the Pleasant View Chapel. In 1963, she joined the First United Methodist Church in Kirksville, and was an active member. In 1984, she was honored by the church for 68 years of teaching Sunday school and for the six years of teaching in the Adair County schools. She was presently a member of the Priscilla Circle and OTP Sunday school class.
Miss Shuman donated many volumes of books to the Adair County Public Library.
Surviving are one sister, Margaret Frances Moore of Alva, Oklahoma; and two nephews, Richard Barnes of Edina, and Carl Moore of Alva, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth May Barnes in 1980; three nieces, one nephew, and one great-nephew, Daniel Barnes on Nov. 26 1989.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15, 1990 in the chapel of the Davis-Playle Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Gibbs.
