FUNERAL FOR FORMER MAYOR TUESDAY 2 P.M.
T.A. Eichorn, 72, Had Been in Failing Health for 2 Years
Funeral services for Thomas A. ("Tom") Eichorn, 72, of 411 E. Illinois, former mayor of Kirksville, will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Foster Memorial Home. The Rev. Edward F. Coffman, pastor of the First Christian church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery.
Mr. Eichorn died Saturday night at 9:30 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past two years and seriously ill four months.
Born Feb. 22, 1892 at Ursa, Ill., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Eichorn. In 1916 at Ursa, he married Beatrice Haines and to this marriage one daughter was born. She preceded him in death in 1921 and on Apr. 22, 1922 at Greenfield, Ia. he married Bertha Johnson who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Mrs. John (Lola) Bolton of 403 S. Cottage Grove; two granddaughters, Karen Bolton of the home and Mrs. Rex (Janice) Meneely of Erie, Pa.; two great-grandchildren and one sister, Maggie Black of Indianapolis, Ind.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Mr. Eichorn moved in 1928 from Ursa, Ill. to Adair county where he was engaged in farming two years. He then moved to Kirksville and opened the Eichorn Grocery. In 1936 due to ill health he sold the grocery and entered a hospital at Rochester, Minn. After regaining his health he returned to Kirksville and opened a grocery store at 310 E. Pierce and later moved to 222 N. Franklin. In 1954 he and his son-in-law opened the Tastee Freeze on the corner of Jefferson and Franklin streets.
In 1956 Mr. Eichorn was elected mayor of Kirksville and shortly thereafter he disposed of his grocery so he could devote his time to the Tastee freeze and the mayorship. Mr. Eichorn was a member of the Christian Church and was a member of the Kirksville Rotary Club. He was greatly interested in the Community Nursing Homes and was a member of the Nursing Home Board.
During his term as mayor he encouraged the beauty of the town with his campaign for "City Beautiful." During this time the City sold many tulip bulbs to residents of Kirksville.
Bearers will be: Don Lile, Clarence Babcock, Frank Reesman, Harley Gill, Russell Roberts and Jim Trent.
Honorary bearers will be: Mayor "Pete" Anesi, Jack Shelton, Arthur Peterson, Vere Treasure, Lane Reesman, Dine Mason, Park Jones and Ray Kropf.
