Dan was born in Medina, Ohio, on May 16, 1947, and passed away on Oct. 1, 2018.
He was a graduate of Buckeye High School. He later served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Chu Lai, Vietnam, at the 2nd surgical hospital, where he met his future bride, Kay Thompson, who was station at the same hospital.
Dan and Kay later married in Honolulu, Hawaii, in January of 1969 and settled in Medina, where they started a family. In 1976 Dan and Kay decided to move to Willow Springs, Mo., with their two sons, Eric and Andrew, where they had become smitten with the friendly nature of the people and beauty of the land.
Dan taught math and science in the Willow Springs school district for over 25 years. He was also the high school’s gifted teacher for many years. Dan enjoyed reading, trout fishing, socializing at local pot lucks with other “back to the landers,” camping, traveling and, in his youth, singing in the choir and playing banjo and guitar. He also loved teaching and helping students thrive in their education. Dan is preceded in death by his wife, Kay Thompson Zorn, and son Eric Zorn, as well as his parents, Leroy and Luella Zorn. He is survived by his son, Andrew Zorn, and his wife, Stacy, of Columbia, Mo., with grandchildren Ellie Zorn, Evan Zorn and step-grandson, Josh Hicks of Springfield, Mo.; his sisters, Linda States of Normal, Ill, and Mary Acerno of Columbus, Ohio, and his nephews, Brian, Dan and Ben.
The family has planned a celebration of life memorial gathering at the Willow Springs Lions Club on Saturday, October 27 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and would like to invite former students, colleagues and friends to join them.
