Obituary

In the death of William McCullough Hull, who passed away Sunday morning June 29th, at 5 o'clock, Kirksville lost one of her best citizens and the First Presbyterian church one of her most loyal faithful members.

Mr. Hull was born August 5th, 1824, in Center Co. Penn. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to Hamilton Co. Ohio. He had been a member of the Presbyterian church nearly sixty years, having professed his faith in Christ under the ministry of the Rev. P.H. Golliday more than a half a century ago in Providence, Indiana.

In 1851, he was united in marriage to Miss Livina A. Rowe, from which union seven children were born, six of whom are still living and were all present during the last hours of their father's sickness, these with the wife and companion of more than fifty years remain to mourn the loss of husband and father.

In 1853 Mr. Hull removed from Indiana to Knox Co. Mo., which was the family home until 1892, when they came to Kirksville where they have since resided.

Mr. Hull was not only a professing christian, but an active church member. He was one of the charter members of the Presbyterian church of Edina, in which church he was also a deacon, as was he also in the First Presbyterian church of Kirksville. At the time of his death, having held this position of importance and trust in the two churches for about forty years.

Mr. Hull was at the time of his death nearly seventy eight years old. Having completed a long, honorable and useful life, serving his God with devotion and his country with fidelity, rearing a family of upright and highly respected christian men and women, his work was done, and ready for the record and crown from the Master whom he had loved and served so long.

The funeral was conducted from the home on East Scott street by his pastor, Rev. W.C. Templeton, assisted by Eld. H.A. Northcutt, pastor of the Christian church and life-long friend of the deceased. The funeral was largely attended by friends and neighbors.

The hymns sung were his favorites and breathed the very atmosphere of heaven. During his last sickness he was a great sufferer, but calm, resigned and patient to the end; ready to go or stay as might be the will of God.

Death to him was but going to sleep, to wake with Christ. He met it calmly, consciously and triumphantly.

"The world recedes, it disappears
Heaven opens on my eyes! my ears
With sounds seraphic ring;
Lend, lend your wings! I mount! I fly!
Oh grave! where is thy victory?
Oh death! where is thy sting?"
