Joseph Woods was born in Logan county, Ohio, Feb. 5, 1842, and died at Girard, Kansas, Aug. 4, 1910; Aged 68 years 4 mos, 11 days.

When a child his parents moved to Van Buren County, Iowa, where he lived until 1874 when he came to adair [sic] County, Missouri. Two years ago he removed to Girard, Kansas, where he resided until death called him to "that city without foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

He was united in the bonds of wedlock to Julia Stemple in January, 1860. To this union, four daughters were born, two of whom, Mrs. Roberts of Girard, Kansas, and Mrs. Moots of Dodge City, Kansas, are still living.

His companion and one danghter [sic] was killed in the Kirksville cyclone of April 27, 1899.

Brother Woods enlisted in the Army August 9, 1862 and served with honor as a member of the 19th Iowa Regiment of volunteers for three years. He held membership in the Grand Army of the republic.

A reference to the records of the First M.E. church shows that he first united with this church on probation under the pastorate of Brother R.L. Thompson, march 19, 1902.

The funeral was held from the First Methodist church Aug 9, at 10 o'clock, the service being conducted by Rev. Ben F. Jones, D.D., assisted by Rev. E.B. Carter, after which he was laid to rest in Highland Park cemetery.
