Daughter of David Devoss Scott and "Rettie" Evelyn Scott
Leta L. Scott was born in Brashear, Missouri, on July 10, 1902, the first of two children born to Henrietta ("Rettie") Evelyn Dabney Markey Baldwin Scott and Rettie's third husband, David Devoss Scott. Rettie, prior to her marriage to David Scott, had been married to John Henry Markey Jr. (a marriage that ended in divorce), and then to William Landon Baldwin (which ended with his death in 1896). In 1900, Rettie married David Devoss Scott.
Leta resided with her parents, a younger brother (Waldo D. Scott), and four older half-siblings on a farm near Hurdland, Knox County, Missouri.
She died of tuberculosis just two months shy of her fifth birthday, and is buried at Paultown Cemetery near Brashear. At the time of her death, her younger brother Waldo was four months old.
Leta's father and Rettie's husband, David Devoss Scott, died in Brashear, Missouri, in 1917. Following his death, his widow Rettie eventually moved west to California in the early 1920s, settling in Ontario, east of Los Angeles. In 1950, she died while hospitalized in neighboring Upland, California.
Leta's younger brother, Waldo, who also made the move west to California, died in Sacramento in 1996.
