Donald E. "Hop" Cassady, 74, of Novinger, Missouri, passed away Saturday (March 7, 2009) at Samaritan Memorial Hospital in Macon, Missouri.
The son of Virgil Eugene "Jack" and Velma (Pope) Cassady, he was born January 19, 1935 in Youngstown, Missouri. On May 26, 1956 in Kirksville, Missouri, Donald was united in marriage to Mary Frances Danner.
Donald is survived by his wife, Mary of fifty-two years; one son, Donald Dwayne and Tracy Cassady of Gifford, MO; three daughters, Dauna Cassady of Queen City, MO, Ronda and Darrel Nance of Kahoka, MO and Robin and Mark Alwardt of LaGrange, KY; one sister, Lavon Dixon and husband Vernon of Prineville, OR; a sister-in-law, Kay Cassady of Kirksville, MO; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Lee and Robert Wayne Cassady.
Hop was a life-long resident of Adair County and was a graduate from Novinger High School with the Class of 1954. He was employed for International Shoe Factory (later Florsheim Shoe Factory) forty-three years as a machine operator.
His favorite pass times were hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed a good card game or other games he played with his grandchildren. Donald was a baseball coach for Novinger Little League and helped bring Jr. Babe Ruth to the area. He served as a Babe Ruth Baseball Commissioner for several years. Donald had been an officer of the Novinger Fire Department for several years and helped as a volunteer fire fighter when his health allowed.
At Donald's request, no public visitation or funeral service is planned. A private burial will be held at a later date at Pinkerton Cemetery.
The Novinger Fire Department will hold a Tribute to Donald on Sunday (March 15, 2009) at 1:30 p.m. at the Novinger Fire House. All family and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pinkerton Cemetery, Lutz Cemetery, V.F.W. or to the charity of the donor's choice. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
