Eugene Mercer, 84, of Hayti, died there July 17. Born Oct. 8, 1901 in Linden, Tenn., he was the son of John Allen and May Wilson Mercer. He was a former manager of a grocery store.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Jones Mercer of Hayti; One son, T.J. Mercer of Hayti; One daughter, Mrs. Ruby Hatton of Naylor; One brother, Hershall Mercer of Linden; Three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Holt of Hohenwall, Tenn., and Mrs. Carmie Grinder and Mrs. Thelma Holt, both of Linden; Eleven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Mary McCulloch, and a son, Herbert Hoover Mercer. Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Penetecostal Church of God in Steele, the Rev. Kenny Durham and Annie Handley officiating, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Steele, John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti in charge.
Pallbearers were Bob Hatton, Robert Reed, James Mercer, Martin Lenand, Jerry McCain and Bobby Reed.
