Amil Collins of Cabool, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at the St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo., following a long illness at the age of 66.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1942, at Twin Bridges, Mo., the son of the late Lonel and Claracy (Johnson) Collins.
Amil grew up in the Ellington, Mo., area. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Air Force. He was united in marriage to Barbara Smith on Jan. 30, 1966, in Midwest, Okla., and to this union, two sons were born.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served overseas in the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan, Thailand and Fairbanks, Alaska.
The last eight years of his service career, he was stationed in Plattsmouth, Neb., where he served with the SAC Airborne Command Post, better know as "The Looking Glass." After retiring in 1981, the family moved back to Cabool where he went to work at the shoe factory in Mansfield for a period of time. He then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a rural mail carrier in Cabool until transferring to Springfield in 1998.
Amil was saved as a young boy in a small Baptist Church in Ellington, Mo., where his mother would walk him and his brothers and sisters every Sunday. After having a massive heart attack, they moved back to the farm near Cabool and had just recently sold the farm and moved to town.
Amil loved the outdoors and hunting with his boys, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Amil was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jerry, Lonel, Harold and Norman; and two sisters, Vivian Smith and Virginia Roe.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara of Cabool; two sons, Tom and wife, Shelly of Tuscola, Texas, and Dustin and wife, Linda of Rogersville, Mo.; five grandchildren, Kayla, Melissa, Alli, Sammi and Aaron; three brothers, Oren of Willow Springs, Mo., Hubert of Littlefield, Texas, and Arnold of St. Louis, Mo., and a host of other relatives and friends.
He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank the Kabul Nursing Home and St. John's Regional Health Center for their professional loving care.
Graveside services were Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Cabool Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Brown officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery with full military rites provided by Whiteman AFB.
Arrangements were under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool, Mo. [Howell County News, Oct 8, 2008]
