Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Hayes passed away after a short illness on Saturday, Oct., 24, 2010, while at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo. Born on June 27, 1924, in Willow Springs, Mo., to Homer V. and Myra Ruth (Hogan) Ferguson, she was 86 years old. Betty graduated near the top of her class from Willow Springs High School in May of 1942. She accepted a scholarship to Southwest Missouri State Teachers College graduating in 1947. Betty worked as a teacher in numerous locations around the country; however, she spent most of her career as a social worker in San Bernardino, Calif. Betty was described as a loving mother. She loved to read and learn, and passed her love of education on to her children. She always taught tolerance and respect for others, living her life as an example. Betty always loved Willow Springs and returned in 1987. She quickly became active in the local theater, ran for the school board, volunteered for the Salvation Army Board, and was a member of the Library Board. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Betty is survived by her three sons, Jonathon Stephen Taylor of Willow Springs; Edwin Leroy Taylor, and Stewart Dale Taylor and his wife Kathy of Boston, Mass. She is further survived by five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Beryl Sanders of Willow Springs. Friends are invited to attend a graveside funeral service on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at 9 a.m. at the Willow Springs City Cemetery, located on Highway DD in Willow Springs. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests remembrances be made in her name to the Willow Springs Library. Arrangements are under the direction of Willow Funeral Home in Willow Springs.
