John F. McArthur, pioneer Pemiscot County citizen, died last Friday night in the Baptist Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., following a long illness and an operation. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Steele with the Rev. Marvin Niblack, pastor conducting the services. Interment was in Mount Zion Cemetery at Steele.
Mr. McArthur was born in Pemiscot County 75 years ago and had spent most of his life here. He lived on his farm near Steele where he had spent most of his adult life. For a time he was in business here and he and his family owned property here while they made their home in this city. They moved their to their farm home near Steele about twelve years ago and he was actively engaged in farming until his death.
Mr. McArthur, being one of the early settlers in this section, was privileged to see and help develop this section from forest and swampland to the broad fertile farms that are now the pride of the county. He was a good neighbor and friend and a devoted father.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Maude Shelton McArthur of Steele, and four daughters, Mrs. Ben White of Blytheville, Ark., Mrs. A.A. Kelley of Memphis, Tenn., Miss Vera McArthur of this city and Mrs. O.M. Skalback of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and a sister, Mrs. Emma Bowen of Steele.
