From Dyersburg Gazette:
Pistol wounds in the neck and lung, inflicted by Sam Gore, restaurant operator, who he is alleged to have been attempting to hold up with a companion, Newt Hendrix, last Thursday night, proved fatal to Jessie Pounds, 21, Tuesday.
Pounds died soon as 1 o'clock Tuesday morning at a Dyersburg Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. The bullet from Gore's revolver, which he fired at the command to put up his hands, struck Pounds in the neck and split, with part lodging in the region of the left shoulder and the other ranging downward through the lung.
Hendrix, who is held in jail here, is quoted as telling officers that Pounds, whose sister he married, asked him to go to the dark spot at the end of a slough bridge to rob someone and get some money. Their attempt to stop Gore cost Pounds his life.
Gore said that he was on his way home to his residence on Tucker street, South Dyersburg, when the men called to him from a dark spot at the northern end of the slough bridge to put up his hands. He took his revolver from a restaurant apron under his arm and fired, striking Pounds.
The restaurant proprietor said he did not know whether the men were armed. A previous attempt had been made to hold him up, according to reports, and he was armed for a second attempt.
Pounds was rushed to the hospital here for treatment. Hendrix is said to have walked to a filling station nearby with several men and from there ran home. He was in bed when taken into custody a few minutes later by Sheriff A.H. Newbill.
Hendrix and Pounds, the former river bottom resident until lately, have been occupants of the residence next door to Gore for several days. Hendrix has been in trouble previously and is under indictment in circuit court here for housebreaking.
Hendrix has been charged with highway robbery and his hearing set for Friday of this week in Esquire Dan Cotton's court. Late Tuesday he had secured only part of his bond for $1000 and was still in jail.
The remains of Mr. Pounds were forwarded to Steele, Mo., his former home, Wednesday morning for funeral services and burial there Thursday.
Pounds is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Pounds of South Dyersburg; three sisters: Mrs. Minnie Overton and Mrs. Juanita Hendrix of South Dyersburg and Mrs. Flossie Wilson of Holland, Mo., who went to Dyersburg immediately after being appraised of her brother's condition, and one brother, John Pounds of Chicago, Ill.
