Mary was the daughter of Calvin and Irena Margaret (Gentry) Edwards who were both born in Kentucky but were married in 1846 in Randolph County, Missouri. Mary was most likely born in Randolph County, Missouri as the family was also living in this location when Mary was 6 years old.

Mary had the following known siblings:

Semiramis M. (Edwards) Grimes 1843-1869
Susan Ann (Edwards) Forrest 1849-1940
Frances "Fannie" Edwards 1859-1919
Ophelia (Edwards) Swinney 1861-1943

Mary's father died when she was 8 years old. Her widowed mother and siblings were listed in the 1870 census living in Audrain County, Missouri.

On May 18, 1877, in Randolph County, Missouri, 22-year-old Mary married widower Samuel Thompson Hull who was about 16 years her senior and who had 7 known children. Mary's mother died in 1879, and in the 1880 census Mary's two younger sisters, Fannie and Ophelia, were living with them in Monroe County, Missouri, as well as 6 of Samuel's children by his first wife, their own first child, a teenage nephew, and a boarder.

Mary and Samuel Hull had 3 known children of their own:

1) Margaret Braxton "Maggie Braxie" (Hull) Alsdorf 1880-1971 [died in Los Angeles, CA]
2) Eula (Hull) Jacobs 1884-1974 [died in Oakland, CA]
3) Gilbert Edwards Hull 1887-

Samuel's obituary states he was a deputy sheriff while living in Monroe County. By 1900, the family had moved to Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri, where Samuel was listed as a retired farmer and he and Mary had three boarders. Mary died in 1901 at the age of 46 and was buried at Forrest-Llewellyn Cemetery.

By 1908, in the City Diretory of Kirksville, Missouri, Samuel Hull, at age 70, was listed as the Chief of Police of Kirksville. Samuel's obituary states he served as Police Chief for 14 years and was known as Cap. Hull.

In the 1910 census, Samuel was listed as the Marshall of the City of Kirksville. Samuel's widowed son Ernest and two grandsons were living with him in Kirksville. In the 1920 census, Samuel was living with his son Ernest and Ernest's second wife. They had a business called Hull & Son, and they all lived in and ran a cafe near the town square in Kirksville.

Capt. Samuel Thompson "S. T." Hull died at the age of 84 in Kirksville, Missouri, and was buried at Forrest-Llewellyn Cemetery beside his second wife Mary.
