Charles was the son of Solomon Hammond and Clarinda Howe. Charles moved from New York state with his parents in the fall of 1860 to St Charles, Missouri. He began working for the North Missouri Railroad in 1864, mastering several positions before being promoted to engineer in 1871.
He married Mary Jane Conkle, in Brashear, MO April 19, 1877. Unfortunately, they were not blessed with children.
