Friday, March 22, 1957: Lysander Berry, one of Pemiscot County's most prominent civic leaders and landowners, died last Thursday, March 14, 1957 at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis. He was 68 years old and had been in ill health for several months. He had undergone surgery Wednesday.
In 1912 Mr. Berry came to Holland from Commerce, Missouri as agent for the Frisco Railroad. Later, he became interested in farming and was a pioneer in the development of south Pemiscot County farmland.
At the time of his death he owned several thousand acres of land, which he operated with his son, Kenneth. He also had ginning interests.
Mr. Berry gave time and financial support to the development of worthwhile community projects. He was influential in the construction of Holland's Methodist Church and as a member supported it financially and with gifts. The Hammond organ was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Berry.
After serving in World War I, Mr. Berry returned to Holland and was married to Miss Ruby Coleman, member of another pioneer family.
In addition to his wife and son, he leaves two grandchildren: Kenneth L. Jr., and Melinda Kay, and a brother, Henry Berry of Tyler.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Holland Methodist Church, with Rev. Marvin Niblack officiating.
Lemond Thompson, Pinnell Capehart, Finis Holmes, Joe Byron Holly, Charles Cohoon and Joe Coleman were active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were T. J. Epperson, Carl Reid, Cardinal Smith, Harry Brown, L. H. Welch, W. L. Osborne, Jr., J. W. Cannon, L. H. Wilferd, Sam Kenley and J. E. Jones.
