Services were held at the Cottonwood Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon for Joseph Renfro Battles, 82, who died at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 26.
The Rev. Ron Abbott conducted the funeral and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery at Steele with H.S. Smith Funeral Home service.
Mr. Battles was born in Wayne county, Tenn. on January 10, 1882 and was the son of William Henry and Susie Battles. In Tennessee, on January 28, 1900, he was married to Miss Isabell Hill and the family moved to Pemiscot county in 1929. He was a farmer for many years until he retired and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Isabell Battles of Cottonwood Point; four sons, William H. of Chicago, Frank of Melrose Park, Ill., Ted of Summit, Ill. and Warren G. Battles of Cottonwood Point; three daughters, Mrs. Martha Robinson of Cottonwood Point, Mrs. Jodie Mead of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Mrs. Tessie Odom of Wardell; 31 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Battles were held Friday, October 10, 1980, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cottonwood Baptist Church. Rev. Paul Dabdoub officiated. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with H. S. Smith Funeral Home of Caruthersville in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Battles was born in Wayne County, Tenn., on January 28, 1881 and died October 8, 1980 at the Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital in Hayti at the age of 99.

She was the daughter of the late William and Martha Hill and attended schools in Wayne County.

On January 28, 1900, she was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Renfro Battles in Wayne County. She moved with her husband to Pemiscot County from Mississippi in 1929. Mr. Battles preceded her in death on January 26, 1964.

Mrs. Battles was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.

She leaves three sons: William Henry Battles of Knoxville, Tenn., Tom "Frank" Battles of Booneville, Miss., and Warren G. Battles of Caruthersville; three daughters: Mrs. Martha Robinson of Caruthersville, Mrs. Jodie Riccobono of Newago, Mich., and Mrs. Tessie Odom of Wardell.; 32 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wendall Armstrong, Stanley Greenway, Steve Henson, Kenny Beck, Edward Abbott, and Robert Hundhausen.
