Kenneth Eugene Smith passed away March 30, 2009 surrounded by family and friends at age 82 years, 11 months, and eight days.
He was the only child of John and Blanche Smith born in Springfield, Missouri, on April 22, 1926.
Kenneth went all 12 years of school in Cabool, Missouri, and graduated in 1944. He grew up on farms around the Cabool and Sargent neighborhoods. He spent his early life working on the farm with his future father-in-law.
On August 17, 1948 he married his lifelong sweetheart, Mary Louise Brooks, in her home near Sargent, Missouri. Kevan Lee Smith was born to the couple on March 12, 1965 in Houston, Missouri.
In 1959, Kenneth went to work at Brown Shoe Company. He retired from there in 1991 after 31 years of service.
On April 15, 1973, he was baptized in the Church of Christ of Cabool. He loved the Lord and loved to hear the word of God preached. He was a loving husband and father. He loved his wife for his lifelong love, support, and companionship. He loved his son with his total heart and they have countless memories traveling together. He loved his daughter-in-law and loved his grandchildren with all his heart. Kenneth loved nature and the outdoor life. He loved to hunt and fish and a free country to live in.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Kevan and wife Lisa; two granddaughters, Lindsey and Megan; and twin grandsons, Corbin and Dylan, all of Cabool. Kenneth will be missed by his family and friends and remembered for time to come.
Pallbearers for the service were Tony Thompson, James Montgomery, Danny LaFavor, Galen Pennington, Delmar Hale, and Gene Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Rusty Hoyle, Don Curry, Gail Underwood, Jim Montgomery, Doc Pugh, and Gary Aldridge.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool with Brother Lawrence Dicharry officiating. Burial was in Sargent Cemetery near Cabool. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Care, Houston. [Cabool Enterprise, April 9, 2009]
