1834 - July 26, 1896
Husband of Elizabeth C. Brady Davis

Hezekiah Davis came to West Plains as a new start for his family. His past home was in Iowa and he was ready for a change. He brought his wife Sarah, along with ten children to West Plains to discover new beginnings. Hezekiah was hired by a farmer five miles north of West Plains to help start the business of a you-pick peach orchard. On July 28, 1896, Hezekiah arrived at the farm to begin his usual duties as managing the farm for a Mr. Penn. Mr. Penn and Hezekiah lived on the farm. A man by the last name of Case arrived on the farm and was interested in a shipment of peaches. Case and Hezekiah quarreled over the possession of the fruit of a particular tree, both calming it. Case, who had gathered some peaches from it in a basket, in his anger threw the basket and contents and grappled with and Hezekiah, and afterwards threw him, falling upon Hezekiah. The wives of the men separated them, and Hezekiah went to the house, where he died in the early afternoon. So you can say that, "Hezekiah Davis died over a case of peaches." Case was arrested and was placed under bond of $500 and awaited action of a grand jury. Case was a young man and Hezekiah was quite old according to newspaper articles. Funeral services were held on July 29, 1896 for Hezekiah and he was buried at Blue Mound Cemetery located five miles east of West Plains on K Highway. Hezekiah's family plot still remains at Blue Mound Cemetery with the burial of his family members.
Hezekiah was born in 1834 in the State of Illinois. His wife was Elizabeth and their last child born was Grover Davis. Grover was born in West Plains in 1885. Grover had a grocery store on the Square in West Plains. Grover was the father of Hilliard Davis and grandfather of Joe Davis.
