"DIES FOR HIS COUNTRY'S SAKE

Jesse B. Ellis, Who lived near Cabool, on Route 3, Died at Camp Funston, Tuesday, December 4, 1917

Cabool Enterprise-Press:
"Jesse B. Ellis, son of J. S. Ellis, of route 3, Cabool, died at Camp Funston, Kansas, Tuesday morning, December 4, of pneumonia following an attack of measles. The young man had been ill (illegible). Saturday, his father left here to be with him in his illness.
Monday the family received word that the boy was improving but Tuesday morning a message arrived announcing his death.
The body will arrive here Thursday night and funeral services and interment will be at Chapel Hill Friday.
Jesse B. Ellis was one day over 21 years old when the call for registration came and was called and accepted in the first call. He is the first one of Texas county's brave patriotic lads to give his life for his country's honor and will be remembered by our citizens with honor and respect, for though he did not die in the thick of some valliant charge, or go down to death in some terrific hand to hand struggle on the field of battle he would have gladly done so if he had lived and been called to meet his doom in that manner. As it was he met his fate calmly and heroicly as becomes a brave man and a soldier and his friends and fellow citizens bow their heads in reverence to the memory of Private Jesse B. Ellis, Soldier. May he rest in peace."

Jesse Ellis' funeral arrangements were handled by Wm. W. Durrom, Junction City, Kansas.
