Billie Maxine Hamilton, 74 of Cabool, MO, affectionately known to her family and friends as Grandma Mac, died suddenly on Saturday July 24, 2010, doing what she loved – working in her flower garden.
Maxine was born on December 16, 1935 in Bado, MO to Cleo and Della Wilson McCall. She was greeted by an older sister Darlene and would later welcome Wendall and Bonnie as siblings in their close knit family.
During those early depression years the family moved from Bado to Bucyrus and then to Cabool where she graduated from Cabool High School in 1954. She loved her classmates and on the evening before her death she spent time with many of them at a classmate’s dinner.
Maxine accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and Lord at an early age and was baptized at Simmons Baptist Camp. She was a charter member of Cabool Second Baptist Church and attended faithfully as her health allowed.
On August 1, 1954 she was united in marriage to Everett Hamilton and to this union two children, Cleea Gay and Allen Ray were born.
Maxine was a multi-talented person and worked at various jobs while always supporting her family. She has been the Burdine Township tax collector and book-keeper for Simonson Chemical. In the 1960’s she and her sister-in-law Alice McCall operated a Memorial Day artificial flower business. Later she helped her husband Everett and son Allen raise registered Charolais and run a 100 cow dairy farm. In the ‘80’s she began working with her daughter Cleea at her retail store on Main Street. Later she helped Cleea at Carousel Unlimited where she and her husband Everett worked exhibition shows for Carousel traveling to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, Kansas City, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. Since Everett didn’t like to fly they drove and made friends all across the country. She also was in charge of the screen printing division of the company, working with hundreds of customers designing and screening shirts for various organizations.
Maxine was a giver; not just to family, friends, and church but to her community. At her death she was a member of the Board of Directors of Kabul Nursing Home and for many years served the City of Cabool on the Board of Equalization and Planning and Zoning board.
Maxine was also a “doer”. She was always on the go or busy with her many talents and hobbies such as quilting and gardening. She often just showed up to help family when they needed help with cleaning, painting, or wall papering.
But Maxine loved to have fun. She and Everett were quite the cloggers and square dancers and traveled all over southwest Missouri dancing. Maxine also loved the special relationships she had with her Farkel buddies and her “quilting” club friends.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Hamilton; parents, Cleo and Della McCall; her brother, Wendall McCall; father-in-law, Chester Hamilton; and mother-in-law, Orlena Carter Hamilton. She leaves her daughter, Cleea and Glen Walls; and son, Allen Hamilton, all of Cabool. Grandma Mac had 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with one more on the way. Holly Hamilton Jenkins and daughter Alexis of Boonville, MO; Rance and Elizabeth Walls, son Logan and daughter Emma of Cabool; Paige and Todd Ferguson of Destin, FL; Crystal and Haley Gatewood of Springfield, MO (expecting Isaac Everett in September); and Brett Hamilton and daughter Caylee of Cabool. She also leaves sisters Darlene and Bud Lawrence of Harrison, AR; Bonnie and Bob Nichols of Willow Springs, MO; sister-in-law Alice McCall of Cabool along with numerous nieces and nephews. All will sadly but lovingly miss her and will have many fond memories of good times together.
Services will be at 10:30AM Tuesday July 27, 2010 at the Cabool Second Baptist Church with Bro. David Purichia officiating. Special music will be provided by Neil Hamilton with Modene Smith accompanying. Pallbearers are nephews Frank Lawrence, Mike Nichols, Shannon Nichols, Matt Nichols, and Doug McCall. Burial will be in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool, MO.
Maxine had long wanted to help her church establish a Prayer Garden. Her sisters, Darlene, Bonnie, and Alice would like to help this prayer and dream come true by beginning a fund for this. If you’d also like to help you may contribute to the Cabool Second Baptist Church Prayer Garden.
