Gabe McClain Brown, son the late William and Ruth Brown, was born January 5 1857 in Newton county, Mo., south of Granby where he lived most of life. He attended school at Springfield, Mo. during the Civil War, returning home with his father, sister and brother.
He took up duties at Ivie Point, later attending Scarritt College in Neosho. Afterwards, he taught a few terms of school, and then attended school in Lebanon, Ohio in 1882. Mr. Brown united with the Primitive Baptist church and baptized by Datuel Hess while still in Ohio.
When he was through school, he returned home and took up farming the present home place. On April 10, 1892, he was married to Lucy J. Hester. To this union seven children were born. Three preceded him in death,
One in infancy, H. H. Brown in 1935, and a daughter, Ivel, in February, 1936.
Gabe McClain Brown died at his home south of Granby Thursday evening, September 22. Had he lived until his next birthday, he would have been 93 years old. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 24, at the family home. The Rev. George T. Kelley, a long time friend of the family, officiated, and burial was in
the family cemetery near the home, under the direction of the Culver-Shewmake Funeral Home of [Granby] Branby.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lucy Brown; two sons, W. H. Brown, Rt. 1, [Granby] Branby, and Heber Brown of the home: two daughters, Mrs. Clifford Patton, Rt. 1 Granby and Irma Brown of the home; four grandchildren,
Joan Brown, Darrel Brown, Mary and George Patton, Rt. 1, Granby; niece of Livingston, Mont., and other nieces and nephews and friends near the home.
The many deeds of kindness are appreciated during his last illness.
