Verlon C. "Rip" Barnard, former resident of Steele, died July 1, 1978 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. Services were conducted in Steele Tuesday, July 4, 1978 at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church with Rev. James F. McCrary and Rev. Jim Growden officiating.

Mr. Barnard was born in Denton November 22, 1927, the son of Lottie and Dewey Barnard. He had lived in Nashville for the past 10 and a half years where he was manager of a Sherwin-Williams Paint Store.

He leaves his wife, Juanita Barnard of the home in Nashville; his parents of Denton; a daughter, Regina Ann Kuykendall of Nashville; two sons: Verlon Dewayne Barnard of Steele and William Eugene Barnard of Nashville. He also leaves two sisters: Mrs. Bonnie Harding of Nashville, and Ms. Mary Stanfield of Kingston, Tenn.; four brothers, Johnnie C. Barnard of Le Harve, Calif., Dewey William Barnard of Union City, Tenn., and Merlon and Don Barnard of Steele.

Active pallbearers were Bobby Tobbs, Merle Mintz, Henry Horton, Jr., Howard Burns, Charlie Adams, and Billy Williams.

Honorary pallbearers were Lowell German, Hoye D. Raines, Freeman Harding, George Marshall, D.P. Reese, Charlie Allen, Jr., Paul Stewart, and Carl Barnard.

Burial was at Mount Zion Cemetery with German-Aumon Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
