Memorial services for Maurice Eugene "Maury" Brown, 82, West Plains, will be at 3pm, Friday, January 21, 2000, at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, West Plains.
Mr Brown died at 3:25pm Thursday, January 13, 2000, at Ozarks Medical Center. He was born October 19, 1917, at Pleasant Plains, Illinois, the son of Eugene and Alice Kaiser Brown.
On May 16, 1939, he was married at St Louis to Doris Ellen Bolin.
Mr Brown served three years with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a graduate of the University of Illinois-Champaign, with a degree in geology and worked in the oil fields of southern Illinois. In 1950, he moved to West Plains from Springfield Illinois to help his father who had bought one half interest in Amyx Mfg Co. He served as city clerk in 1953 and 1954, then became an insurance agent for Federated Mutual Insurance Company.
In 1967, Mr Brown started as a drafting instructor at West Plains High School. He became director of the Vocational Technical School in 1969, and started and adult level licensed practical nursing program. He received a master's degree in industrial educational adminstration from University of Missouri Columbia.
Mr Brown was active in many civic activities, including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, volunteered at Ozarks Medical Center, and hosted a radio talk show on KWPM-AM called "Over the Back Fence". He was a member of the hospital funding committee that raised money to build West Plains Memorial Hospital, was a member of the library committee that secured the old Post Office building on East Main Street to house the West Plains Public Library, was master of ceremonies at many charitable and civic events. He loved motor sports and was the track announcer at several area stock car tracks.
Survivors include one son, Dr Gene K. Brown, one daughter, Mary Jo Robertson, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Alice Tolan, Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; one daughter, Karen Lee Henry and one sister, Betty Aggertt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Plains Public Library and left at the funeral home.
Doris Ellen Brown, daughter of the late William K. Bolin and Estella Blair Bolin was born September 9, 1917 in Sullivan, Illinois and died April 29, 1999 in West Plains, Missouri at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 20 days.
She was united in marriage May 6, 1939 in Champaign, Illinois to Maurice Eugene Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Maurice, West Plains, two children, Dr. Gene K. Brown and Mary Jo Robertson, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many neices and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Karen Lee Henry, four brothers and two sisters.
She was a retired teacher having taught Home Economics and Family Relations classes at the West Plains High School for twenty years. She graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
